Prose & Lore Issue 2: Memoir Stories About Sex Work

Prose-Lore-2Prose & Lore is the Red Umbrella Project’s literary journal, which collects memoir stories about sex work in two issues per year. I’m particularly excited about the journal because it gives me inspiration for my own forthcoming anthology project, How to Come Out Like a Pornstar. (Yes, the same one I’ve been working on all this time. No one said it’d be easy!) Reading a collection of literature from a wide range of experiences and writing styles reminds me how crucial it is to share our stories. Especially the ones often unspoken.

I had the pleasure of attending a Red Umbrella Diaries reading event once. It was quite an event, held at Happy Endings Lounge (a former erotic massage parlor turned bar in New York), where workers past and present stood at a mic and shared parts of themselves with a blend of humor, camaraderie, and courage. The pages of Prose & Lore recalls to my mind the raw emotional element of oral history, recorded with the permanence of the written word. Editor Audacia Ray says it best in her introduction:

Telling stories in community—out loud in a room—is a powerful thing. But being a witness is not just about being in the room with someone and hearing their voice shake as they speak their truth. Having stories take up space in the world—in, say, a literary journal—is important too. Within the Red Umbrella Project (RedUP) community in New York, we are trying to create spaces—physical, creative, and emotional— where people who have sold or traded sex can be honest with each other and can develop the skills of writing and telling their stories.

I’ve been given permission to post one of it’s works. Of all the varied stories of sex work, I chose to post LESSON LEARNED, by Danielle, about performing in porn. It’s a revealing first-hand account that I was particularly drawn to because I was surprised to find myself in the background of the story. Without naming names, I can say that it’s fascinating to see another angle from years ago, like watching a scene in a movie from a supporting character’s point of view.

LESSON LEARNED
Danielle

It’s counter-intuitive, to fight against the reign of your body when it’s in the throes of passion, even if the passion is documented on film. If you’re one of the lucky ones that can drown out the cameras, the bright lights, the camera crew, the deafening silence that seems to envelop the sound of your pounding heart and your heavy breathing, in the back of your mind, you still have to fight against the urge, the ravaging, screaming, pounding urge, to shut your legs tight. Snap, quick, clicking like two shells just grazing their edges. I never smell the ocean when I cum, still I think of oysters.

It was S who told me first: Never close your legs when you’re coming, the camera can’t see anything. It had never dawned on me that the camera was the eye that I was playing for, the giant wide-open eye that was the observing my every move.

S was the first person I had met when I started doing porn. At that time, she was a small legend, part of duo that was revolutionizing the way that LGBTQ folks viewed porn. None of this mattered to me, when my girlfriend at the time pointed her out at a dance party, and said, “If you want to make porn, that’s who you talk to.” I ran up to S. I was drunk. “I want to be in your films,” I screamed. Probably loudly. I had never been so sure of anything in my life. Later, she would describe the situation as the easiest casting recruitment she ever had to do.

In my real life, when I fucked who I wanted, I would snap my legs shut. The moment of breaking up and never wanting to come undone, unwrapped from my partner, the easiest way was to snap shut my legs. Weave them tightly together, using all my strength, fighting the sweat, just to stay there a bit longer. My legs are strong from ten years of high school athletics and active gym routine.

This is counter-intuitive, yet I remember, in the midst of my performance, because that is what it is, a performance, that the camera’s eye, the audience’s wide stance on the edge of their seats, does not care about the strength of my upper thighs and my automatic response not to disentangle from my partner. Even if the sex is just for work. Still, I remembered with every turn of my body and every turn of the camera, never shut my legs. Always open towards the camera. Always open towards the camera. Always open for the camera.

Mr. C wasn’t the creepy kind of porn director, not that I had the pleasure of meeting too many directors for my judgment to be completely accurate. I think that my general alt appearance in the mainstream porn world, mixed with my brash art form at the moment of no return, took charge of the situation for no bullshit.

Or maybe I was just lucky.

The room was small, in the upstairs part of a large Porn Valley mansion, the type that seem to only be constructed for the purpose of shooting films. No one actually lived in these replications of Home & Beauty commercials, the rooms were furnished completely out of expensive department catalogs. No one real lived liked this, only the make believe students who were always home alone, the new fresh-faced real estate agents, and the tired babysitters. I once was all of them. Never at the same time.

The room was unfurnished, aside from a large, unmarked bed, fitted with feminine sheets that were neither bright nor frumpy. Mr. C wanted slightly memorable but not overpowering, pretty but not breathtaking. The large bed faced a wall of mirrors, floor to ceiling, that hid a very large and sadly empty closet. These mirrors forgave nothing but flourished only the sense that this was make believe. We could see everything, her and I, as we rolled around on the bed.

This house was not made for the normal folks.

“Whatever you do, do not look in the camera,” Mr. C laughed. “If you look in the camera, we will have to reshoot everything, from the beginning.”

Spending an entire day rolling around in bed didn’t sound half bad, but really, I just wanted to get back to my friend’s house with his big yellow Lab and then eat Thai food alone.

The big eyes of the cameras were making me sweat.

We laughed, her and I.

“No looking at the cameras, promise,” we said. The mirrors mocked our promise. How could we not look at ourselves, our egos glaring at us as we performed as best as we could, while the crew stood in front of the unforgiving closet, their back sides reflected back to us as our front sides were captured on film. We were the meta in creation of porn. An endless mirror of clothed turned into unclothed back into clothed. All for the camera.

It was easy to not look at the cameras, those eyes blinked silently at me, and I had practiced blinking them away. The mirrors were different, they laughed at my body, at my movements, at my every physical choice. My hard choice was to not let the mirrors taunt me. I just tried to not look. It was better that way.

Girl-Boy-Jiz-Lee-Manuel-Ferrara

Girl/Boy joins the ranks of being one of the most anticipated films I’ve yet to do. My work with cisgender men is rare, in part because I don’t fit the standard porn look or script. Also, it’s a unique opportunity to work with condoms on a “heterosexual” sex shoot. So it’s once in a blue moon that such a scene takes place, when I feel like I can insert myself into what is predominantly a very straight industry.

Director Dana Vespoli subverts typical gender roles in porn and introduces gender play, while maintaining the look of heterosexual hardcore gonzo — it’s a slick move that puts it on the top of a very short list of transgressive, female-directed mainstream porn. And fans who have wanted to see me fuck a hunky man in straight-up P-in-the-V sex are absolutely going to loose their shit.

Description: In “Girl/Boy,” creative director/gorgeous performer Dana Vespoli lewdly explores the diverse permutations of “straight” sex with the kinky twists that are par for this artistic pornographer’s course. Four sensuous vignettes showcase strong, intimate hard-core fucking with intriguing variations on gender relations. First, stunning, all-natural Valentina Nappi puts on a seductive private show for a decadent couple – Ramon Nomar and Dana, who’s sporting a strap-on. Their nasty anal threesome includes a daisy-chain butt fuck, double-penetration, foot worship and ass-to-mouth cocksucking. The scene climaxes with Valentina squirting her ejaculate into Dana’s gaping asshole! Next, pale, petite brunette pixie Veruca James shares a passion-filled afternoon with androgynous alt-boy Danny Wylde; she rides his prick as she screams in a sweaty orgasm. Strikingly beautiful Jiz Lee is an androgynous model sporting a formal men’s suit and a short haircut. They meet the gaze of suave superstud Manuel Ferrara, and soon the toned, sexy stud is grinding away on his enormous cock and hungrily bobbing on his massive meat. In the final scene, Dana plays a brusque, tattooed businesswoman who turns a cold, no-nonsense outcall date with muscular escort Johnny Castle into a fierce, emotional session of intense fucking. The pro leaves his satisfied customer exhausted and splattered with gooey cum. Get ready for a trip into the unexpected – in “Girl/Boy,” the blurring of gender boundaries is serious fucking fun! Dana Vespoli’s “Girl/Boy” is a single-disc DVD with cumshot recap, photo galleries, cast list, filmographies and trailers.

Fisting Day

Happy International Fisting Day!

You ready for a monster post? Well grab your lube, lay back, and relax. It’s late on Thursday night and I’m typing this out at one of my favorite bars, El Rio. San Francisco just felt it’s second earthquake today. It makes me shiver thinking about the fragility of our lives, the great divides between the earth and our existence. And then, you know, there’s fisting. Crossing my fingers the ground below my feet withhold a mighty quake, let’s get this blog going.

Not too long ago, I was chatting with my friend and fellow pornographer Courtney Trouble, about her recent film LiveSexShow, which is a fundraiser for the Center for Sex and Culture filmed during the non-profit’s annual Masturbate-a-Thon. I performed with Nina Hartley, for an audience of pleasure activists. And the chemistry was high with me and Nina, and we jumped into each other, and we had a grand time, and during that time, her fingers and then her whole hand went inside my cunt. And then I came for the crowd and for myself, and for my friend holding a video camera for the world to see.

At least, we hope the world could see.

For as long as I’ve done porn, distribution companies and retailers have banned the act of fisting in the films I’ve been in. It feels like it’s always been this way, but that’s not true. It’s only been a little over a decade.

Anti-porn movements, in particular the administrations which coincide with them, have had a bone to pick against pornography. For obvious reasons, I’m pro-porn, sex-positive, and a firm advocate of consensual, ethical, and artistic erotic imagery. For the circles I run in, the act of making porn is a brave, powerful, and righteous thing. We’re representing marginalized communities, taking power through creating our own images of desire. As my friend Shine Louise Houston infamously says, that as a queer woman of color, it’s especially important for her to create her own sexual images. And I completely and passionately, agree. Explicitly demonstrating our pleasure shows authenticity that rivals anything shown of queers in Hollywood films and brings examples of healthy sexuality that have long been denied in sex education classes. Safer sex? Check. Communication? Check. Equal gender agency, you bet. Lube? Right here.

Since 2005, I’ve been appearing in porn for DVD distribution that I knew would not include fisting, one of my favorite sex acts. Even my very first porn scene with my lover at the time, Syd Blakovich. It didn’t make sense that fisting couldn’t be shown, but I tossed it up to it being the fact that porn is marketed and driven by a lot of assumptions about what sells, what sex should look like, what the people who have sex should look like, yada, yada, yada. Basically all the reasons why I knew I was doing something important.

But wait, why is fisting so important? What do I like about it? Ask me? Okay, here’s some actual questions I’ve had, about fisting:

Why is fisting important to you?
My first experiences with hand sex, where my body took in the entire fist of a lover, happened around a time of galactic sexual exploration. I was in my early twenties and it was mind-blowing. The orgasms were intense and I was in an open relationship and was dating a lot of people so it was exciting for me to have sex with friends and teach them how to fist me, to fist others, and to really enjoy practicing sex in a safe way and to experience this with lovers of all kinds of genders and sexual orientations. It was so much fun. Fisting is about being really present and in your body, and ready for a good time.

Why do you love fisting?
What I love about fisting someone vaginally is feeling them take me in. There’s an moment where the person just opens up to you. Once inside, they’re so warm, wet, and every little movement you make can be felt. It’s something that may take time. Fisting is something that doesn’t necessarily happen right away. You put a finger in. Then two. Then three, four, and then… and sometimes after long gentle coaxing, the thumb. Sometimes lovers can try several times in sex before fisting happens. But once you’ve got it, it’s golden! You can angle your hand for G-Spot stimulation. You can find your lovers’ “A Spot”, which is just under the cervix and some like to feel a bit of pressure there. You can carefully stroke and “jerk-off” the cervix, as if it were a small, internal cock. Unlike using a strap-on or dildo toy, my hand can feel every motion. It’s incredibly intimate and really sexy. If the chemistry and connection with my partner is strong, can literally come from penetrating someone with my hand!

As someone who loves to receive a fist, what I enjoy about it is an unparalleled feeling of fullness. The most sensitive areas of the vagina are just within the first few inches inside the vagina, which is where I like to use my kegel and pelvic muscles to grip snugly around a lovers’ wrist, which can be compared to the girth of a medium-large dildo. Deeper inside, pressure feels good for me. I like to rock my hips against a lovers’ hand, or hold very still and squeeze hard, creating a game where I try to hold their hand tightly in place as they move against me. I do my kegel exercises and am pretty strong so I have a lot of control over my vaginal muscles and can make myself very tight, or, allow myself to stretch open. Or pulse between the two extremes. Combining clitoral and vaginal stimulation, the network of nerves and contracting of muscles orchestrate some of the most amazingly intense orgasms I’ve had.

What do you say to people who think it’s dangerous or scary?
Some people think fisting is intense in a bad way — that it hurts. But anyone who loves fisting knows that it can be the most intimate and beautifully connecting experience with a lover. Or a really fun in a three-some — I’ve held the hand, fingers locked, with a lover while the two of us have fisted a friend. I’ve also had both my fists inside two different lovers at the same time, while they kissed intensely. I’ve 69′ed with fisting, and I’ve even fisted myself!

Fisting isn’t any more scary than any kind of unwelcome sexual advance. However many people don’t know that much about it. We learn about sex as only being penis-vagina intercourse. But sex is so much more! We don’t learn much about sexual anatomy, how to communicate with lovers, or about pleasure. In fact, when we see a fist, we may be more inclined to think of it punching someone in the face because we see images of violence more common and at a younger age than we do sex. (ie: Cartoons show characters throwing punches and shooting guns, yet wont show even a bare breast.) In “This Film Will Not Be Rated”, we see the MPAA approve violent scenes with more leniency than they do sex scenes, especially ones featuring female pleasure. So when we as a culture are more familiar with a fist being used to harm someone, it’s no wonder that someone who hasn’t had a healthy sex-positive education about fisting would assume it is painful. In our culture we see fists as painful weapons, when I see them as revolutionary weapons of sex-positive progress. Or, you know, the ASL symbol for the letter “E”. See? That’s not so scary. :-)

What’s your experience with fisting?
Personal love of the topic aside, my work in adult has primarily featured fisting. In fact, I fist in my films more often than I’ve worn a strap-on. This may come as a surprise to many DVD buyers, who would never see the act as it’s been edited or angled out of the scenes, with the exception of online website content for queer porn sites. And with the exception of Courtney Trouble’s new film “LiveSexShow” where I am fisting by Nina Hartley. I’ve also performed as a demo model for Fisting Demonstrations in adult classes such as Reid Mihalko’s Iron Slut: Sex Educator Showdown! and have taught it as a guest lecturer on sex ed at colleges and universities. I am also a contributor in “The Official Book of Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll Lists”, where I give my Top Five Songs about fisting.

So there you go. And while it’s not the first time I knew fisting couldn’t be shown in a hardcopy DVD, this year it was the first time I’ve heard of fisting being banned by a Video on Demand (VOD) company due to fisting. And here’s where some background comes into play. Because: WHY is it okay to show fisting ONLINE, but not in a hard copy DVD?

Well. Here’s what I know.

DVD distributors, retailers, and porn producers, are afraid to SELL porn if it means they might be charged with an obscenity. To date, some men are in jail or have had court orders for showing “obscene” content, such as John Stagliano and Seymore Butts. This content includes female ejaculation, enemas, and in 2001, fisting. The charges in the case of fisting were dropped with an plea bargain for a meager $1,000 fine. However this scared distributors because since that date, at least in terms of the companies who have distributed my films, fisting was NOT to be shown. If fisting was present, footage was edited out if it was visible, or left in if the camera angle was such that you couldn’t tell fisting was occurring. Why fisting?

Fisting is on the Cambria List of sex acts not allowed for inclusion in content meant for physical distribution.

From PBS:

On January 18th, 2001, Adult Video News reported on the so-called “Cambria List.”  Paul Cambria, a longtime attorney for the porn industry, was involved in the list’s preparation. The list is controversial within the industry and interpretations differ on how it was meant to be applied. Some in the industry say it represents guidelines for the box-covers of adult videos, not for the sex acts they depict. Nevertheless, there is wide agreement that the Cambria List shows how the adult industry is seeking to be more careful, fearing a potential crackdown on pornography by the Bush Administration.

The Cambria List:

Box-Cover Guidelines/Movie Production Guidelines

Before selecting a chrome please check facial expression. Do not use any shots that depict any unhappiness or pain.

Do not include any of the following:

  • No shots with appearance of pain or degradation
  • No facials (bodyshots are OK if shot is not nasty)
  • No bukakke
  • No spitting or saliva mouth to mouth
  • No food used as sex object
  • No peeing unless in a natural setting, e.g., field, roadside
  • No coffins
  • No blindfolds
  • No wax dripping
  • No two dicks in/near one mouth
  • No shot of stretching pussy
  • No fisting
  • No squirting
  • No bondage-type toys or gear unless very light
  • No girls sharing same dildo (in mouth or pussy)
  • Toys are OK if shot is not nasty
  • No hands from 2 different people fingering same girl
  • No male/male penetration
  • No transsexuals
  • No bi-sex
  • No degrading dialogue, e.g., “Suck this cock, bitch” while slapping her face with a penis
  • No menstruation topics
  • No in-cest topics
  • No forced sex, rape themes, etc.
  • No black men-white women themes

Several things are not on this list and several things are on this list which should never have been. I mean, WTF?!

I emailed Queery Bradshaw, who has a legal background and she confirmed what I expected about the legal aspects behind several porn obscenity trials when they come to bringing visibility to marginalized sexual practices. Particularly in terms of freedom of expression. She wrote back:

It’s a double edged sword because the more a topic, scene or act becomes mainstream, the least likely it is going to be considered obscene against the community standard. But, if you’re constantly censored for fear of being prosecuted, you can’t make those acts known or common place. I know authors that have had fisting (or the mention of sex at all even) censored out of their beautiful non-erotic literary works of art. People are afraid and the only way to stop that fear is to talk about it, but you don’t know if you talk about it if you’re going to be prosecuted. And that is why I totally agree with you Jiz that this is completely and totally a free speech censorship issue and that we need to talk about how healthy it is so people stop seeing fisting as this thing that people do to degrade and dishonor another (which is justification often for censoring anything).

Despite this go-to list, there’s more info to know about pornography and obscenity, which is the Miller Test, which courts have gone to in efforts to determine what might be obscene when there’s no written rule. Here’s Constance Penley talking about obscenity and pornography. (Constance is a co-editor of the upcoming “Feminist Porn Anthology” which will be made available to the gender studies classes to colleges and universities world-wide.)

The Miller test was developed in the 1973 case Miller v. California. It has three parts:

  • Whether “the average person, applying contemporary community standards”, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,
  • Whether the work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law,
  • Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.

The work is considered obscene only if all three conditions are satisfied.

The first points are up to the standards of the community. What community? Whatever applies! That’s what makes it vague. The last one in particular is held up to whatever is reasonable to a person of the United States as a whole. The Miller Test is basically the reason why it’s okay to have more freedom of sexuality online, while less on physical DVDs. While there are many areas in the United States where it is illegal to mail pornography, it’s more difficult to determine online community. This is especially true for queers who at least in my case have found community online. To further prove my point, many queers think fisting is completely normal. (If not just normal, it’s amazing!)

If I had a dime for every time I’ve given a talk and had people give me a confused “WTF?” look when I brought up the fact that fisting was banned from DVDs “Why? What’s wrong with fisting?” I would have enough money to pay my way into congress and provide adequate (queer and kink friendly) education to every citizen in the US so that people will understand pleasure and sex-positivity.

So here we are.

I’ve fisted in much of my films and online content. In fact, I think I’ve fisted more times than I’ve squirted or even worn a strap-on. It’s that common. While I have been somewhat unfortunately hesitant to fist on film because I know about the ban, I also have the liberation with companies who have web content because I know they wont have to edit it out. I also know that film crews can film a “soft” shot of the action if they so please. It’s something I’ve dealt with for a while now, and because I know that the way we consume porn is changing and going more and more to the internet so eventually fisting will reign.

Imagine my surprise when I heard that Courtney’s film submitted for VOD was denied because of the scene. Not VOD! The internet is supposed to be okay with fisting, because it’s my community who likes to see it. That’s what prompted our Fisting Day. We have to let people know more about fisting. Why it’s supposedly banned, why it’s awesome if they’ve never thought about it before. Why it’s okay, even political, to love fisting.

If you want to watch me fisting, I recommend QueerPorn.TV scene with Papí Coxxx and most of my scenes on CrashPadSeries.com, including cool double fisting and simultaneous fisting scenes with Syd Blakovich & Micah Riot, and Dallas & Vai. And ANOTHER fisting scene with Nina.

Finally, as promised in my post announcing fisting day, here is a small gallery of fisting!

PornFilmFest Berlin 2013

I’m off to Europe for PornFilmFest Berlin 2013!

Berlin’s annual porn festival is a really place. The last time I attended, over 140 films were shown over the course of several days and in multiple theaters. I expect there will be at least that many this time around. There’s an incredible diverse selection of films presented. Really experimental artporn, oddball pervy comedy, exquisite foreign sex movies, and even animation. Gay animated porn from the 70′s? Yep. All that and then some!

The audience who attends the festival is a mixture of directors, performers, and open-minded individuals, all curious about how we use film to represent ourselves as sexual beings. I always learn a great deal through conversations with people at the festival, and I’m looking forward to continuing the discussion this year when I return.

And it will be a busy trip. I’m featured in a “Performer in Focus” event, where I’ll be screening JUSTIFY MY JIZ, GIRL/BOY, and select clips from CrashPadSeries.com. It will be followed by a Q&A, and I’ll look forward to sharing my thoughts about my more recent work with the audience.

I’ll also be featured in DEAR JIZ (Louise Lush), and Mommy is Coming (Cheryl Dunye) will screen again this year due to popular demand. I also have a small cameo in Valencia: The Movie/s which will screen. Finally, I’ll be leading a workshop this year, “FUCKING FOR REEL: How to Have “Real Sex” in Porn.” Recently there’s been a lot of talk about “real sex vs porn” — I want to approach this idea on a practical level, and really dig in to the performative aspects of having pleasurable sex for the camera. (Registration info)

I’ll be busy around the UK and Germany before and after the festival with some shoots. I wont say too much as to not spoil some of the surprises, but I’ll be posting on social networks from the road so stay tuned to my @jizlee Twitter feed for updates and sneak peeks. (I will say this: I just can’t seem to get enough of Wolf Hudson!)

Here’s my planned schedule for PornFilmFest Berlin.

Wednesday, October 23rd
Mommy Is Coming (11:15am)
KINK (8:30pm) – Followed by Q&A with Kink.com performers Wolf Hudson, Aiden Starr, and Jiz Lee

Thursday, October 24th
Lesbian Pain – OCCUPIED (11pm) – Jiz Lee  in attendance *I was the film’s production assistant, and will be representing on behalf of Pink & White Productions.

Friday, October 25th
Performer in Focus: Jiz Lee (4:30pm)

Saturday, October 26th
Workshop – FUCKING FOR REEL: How to Have “Real Sex” in Porn (2pm)
Lesbian Shorts – Dear Jiz (5:15) – Jiz Lee in attendance

For more information, see the Festival Program. Here’s the schedule Timetable.)

Always time for a little morning naked artsy stretch.

Jiz-Lee-Annie-Cruz

Dana Vespoli is one of the best directors in porn. So when called me up and asked me if I’d like to work for her, I jumped. It was also the first time I would have the opportunity to meet and work with Sovereign Syre. My general rule is to only work with people who I’ve already met, but I make exceptions when I’m crushed out on their intellect. (My photo shoot with Stoya fell under this category. I’m a sucker for smarties.) So I took a chance based purely on the words of Sovvy’s blog and Twitter, where I am smitten by her wit and honesty. She picked me up from Burbank Airport for a quick bite to eat and we got to know each other before our call time. A few hours later, we were RTing booty pics and flirting poolside.

Though I don’t identify as a lesbian (I’m genderqueer), I value the opportunity to work within “Girl on Girl” or Lesbian Porn, bringing more butch visibility to female sexuality. Even if my preferred pronouns (they/them) are not used, I can still insert my androgynous, genderqueer aesthetics into the industry and open it up to more possibilities of eroticsing non-binary gender expressions. Simple things like hairy legs and short hair make me a “gateway queer” in exposing curious viewers to diverse gender and sexual experiences. Plus, as was definitely the case of Tombois 2, it’s a great job.

Description: In the second installment of Sweetheart’s sexy series, lesbian butches and femmes come together in four electric scenes. Stunning Jiz Lee seduces curvy Sovereign Syre poolside, driving the beauty into multiple orgasms. Zany beauty Celeste Star tries to turn on boyish Alani Pi, as the cute butchy girl tries to fix Celeste’s car. Alani manages to fix more than Celeste’s car as the two pleasure each other over and over. Tomboi Raven Rockette works to convince girly girlfriend Jodi Taylor to come out to her parents, plying her with mind-blowing orgasms in the process, and finally Nina Hartley and Lily Cade go at it, showing everyone why she won the Mile High Sweepstakes in an adrenaline raising, crazy scene filled with passion and pleasure.

Great news! I’ve been invited to be featured on the awesome sex-education comic & sex toy review site, OhJoySexToy.com, created by Erika Moen with help from her devastatingly handsome husband, Matthew Nolan. (You may remember Erika did my awesome holiday card last year, and did a queer porn comic review of CrashPad!)

The new comic  is “Ask a Porn Star” and will include luminary lovelies such as Stoya! I’m thrilled to be included, and even more so because it includes you, too.

ASK ME A QUESTION!

You ask in a bunch of different public and private ways:

  • Below, in the comments
  • Twitter
  • Facebook (Follow me!)
  • Email me jiz@jizlee.com

Don’t be shy. I’m NICE! Plus, no question is too silly and ALL questions will be used to help me brainstorm responses, which I’ll send on over to Erika to be drawn up in comic form for the site and posted sometime in 2014. So… ask away!

Happy New Years!

April-Flores-Jiz-Lee
April Flores and myself, presenting on stage at the 2014 XBIZ Awards. Photo: Rick Garcia.

The last few weeks have been a busy blur.  I’ve obviously fallen out of touch with regular blog updates, but made a resolution to keep at it, so I can’t let these two major adult industry events come and go without some sort of documentation. The time spent was tiring, though I’m one of the fortunate few to have escaped without catching a flu, but also left me with more of a taste of entry into the mainstream, and more fuel to the fire to keep at it. You know that saying, “I don’t give a fuck?” Well, I may not care about naysayers and negativity, but I care deeply, and I give a LOT of fucks.

I attended the Adult Entertainment Expo to speak on behalf of Shine Louise Houston in the “Feminist Porn Mystique Panel” at AEE, moderated by Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals, with Nina Hartley, Dana Vespoli, Angie Rowntree (of Sssh.com), and Stormy Daniels. The panel posed a discussion on the concepts behind the feminist porn movement, though it also hit my pet peeve nerve with many comments conflating the term with “porn for women.” If this is your first time hearing the buzzword and your curiosity is piqued, may I direct your curiosity to The Feminist Porn Book. There’s also the annual Feminist Porn Conference at University of Toronto, at which I’ll be presenting again this year, followed by the Feminist Porn Awards, and you can browse the Complete List of Feminist Porn Award Winners (2006-2013).

I also had the pleasure of staying up until “dumb O’clock” with Lux Alptraum proving once again that we can talk about porn forever, and along with Sex Nerd Sandra, Justine Joli, Gram Ponante and others got to experience the magic of sushi with watermelon Pop Rocks! Thank you, Chris Santos.

The trip culminated with the AVN Awards, where I was nominated in a new category, Best Safe[r] Sex Scene with Manuel Ferrara in Girl/Boy, by Dana Vespoli. “Best Safe Sex Scene” really was the perfect category. A large part of the rarity in my doing work with cisgender men is the fact that I only work with condoms. It’s surprisingly difficult even within the few experiences I’ve had shooting with directors and companies that are okay with it. It’s not easy to shoot porn with condoms; they have to be a good fit and there’s extra lubrication required. But for me, the effort is worth it. While I could see our scene nominated simply for Best Sex Scene, the fact that AVN added this category calls a lot of attention on the conversation on condoms in porn. (If you don’t know my stance, in a nutshell: I’m in favor of performer’s choice either way, without company pressure, and with better non-latex options, and more lube education.)

The AVN Award Show was fun. I got to FINALLY meet Siri, a performer who has said she was inspired to get into porn through my work, and whom I have the utmost respect for. Someday we’ll have the perfect opportunity to work together, and it will be magical. I also had the pleasure of sitting at the show with Betty Blac, an old college friend who also came to me for porno advice and who is also making waves in the industry: she was nominated for AVN’s new category, BBW of the Year, though she could have also fit into the New Starlet category. Betty and I stayed until the end to see the winners. (Only a few category winners are accepted onstage, while the rest scroll on the screen.)

Neither Girl/Boy nor CrashPadSeries.com (nominated for Best Alternative Website) won, but the nomination is always appreciated as it’s a nod towards the work that myself and other queer, indie directors and performers are doing. And, it’s a reflection on the state of the industry and how society views and consumes sexuality. The big win of the night went to my DOLL April Flores, who was awarded BBW of the Year, though she could have easily been inducted into the Hall of Fame for how influential she’s been. AVN also projected an image of my friend and honorary Queer Porn Mafia inductee, the late Carlos Batts, who passed away last October. We still miss him.

If you nominate them, they will come. This was my first time attending XBIZ 360 Conference and the XBIZ Awards. After a few days home to take care of business (moving to a new SF apartment) I was back on a plane, this time to LA to moderate “Porn Disrupted: The Politics of Changing Sexual Attitudes” with panelists Shine Louise Houston, Dr. Carol Queen (Sexologist and Co-Director of Center for Sex & Culture), Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals (scholar, author of You Study WHAT?!), Ben Tao (Offbeatr), and Collin Rowntree (Wasteland). I think the panel went well, given the short amount of time and the diverse experiences of the panelists, and as a first-time moderator, I learned a lot.

It also felt important to have a chance to share my personal experience of how I came to find myself wanting to do porn, having been inspired by the late Asian American trans male pornographer Christopher Lee’s Sex Flesh in Blood, as well as the works of SIR Productions, who “disrupted” my notion of the monolithic porn stereotype and “broke” what porn meant to me, thus allowing me to see myself reflected on a sexual screen. I am grateful to have been invited to take such a charge, and I hope it can happen again next year.

It was also great to get to know the panelists, and vendors who were there. I really hit it off with Colin, and it was a treat to run into Nenna (check out Feelmore’s Films!), and to finally meet Tres from Spareparts.

The highlight of XBIZ for me was being invited to present an award on stage with April. Presenting an award felt like an award in itself. The two of us walked out on the stage holding hands, and took our place at the podium standing squarely to face a sea of the adult industry’s most influential professionals. Friends in the crowed went nuts (shout out to Stockroom!) and the audience erupted into cheers and applause.

I know I use the word “visible” a lot, but it truly felt like we were being seen by the industry, and we probably were literally seen for the first time for quite a few in the audience. We were visible, validated, and I was glowing. We announced the winners for two of the night’s Specialty Categories that would receive their awards on stage: Gay Movie of Year and Transsexual Performer of the Year — Congrats Venus Lux!

Venus-Lux
Venus Lux, 2014 XBIZ Awards Transsexual Performer of the Year!

Where AVN had nominated my scene with Manuel for Best Safe Sex Scene, XBIZ had nominated it for simply Best Sex Scene (Non-Feature Film). It wasn’t awarded, however it received what I feel was an even more appropriate accolade: Dana was awarded Best Director for Girl/Boy! She and John Stagliano (Evil Angel), and Manuel, all took a big risk in creating a hardcore adult film that played with gender in a transgressive way. Check out the Press Release posted by XBIZ. I’m proud of her success and honored to have been its inspiration. It’s pretty queer for a straight porn, and more importantly, it has the distribution power that can put it on the shelves in a lot of places queer porn doesn’t have access.

But the night wasn’t over yet. As the non-stage awards scrolled and the grand ballroom began to clear out, I sat fixed to the screen with fellow porners James Darling, April, and Courtney Trouble. James and Courtney were nominated for an impressive slew of awards spanning the trans, feminist, and specialty categories for their work with FTMFucker.com, TransGrrrls and QueerPorn.tv.

We waited, and cheered for joy when Pink & White Productions (Directed/Founded by Shine Louise Houston) won the award show’s newest category, Feminist Porn Release of the Year for its short film OCCUPIED: a queer hardcore romance for the 99% … and then AGAIN when CrashPadSeries.com won Specialty Site of the Year! Specialty is an award that had previously gone to Kink.com, a company multiple times larger than CrashPad. In truth, Pink & White feels like the underdog in the grand scheme of things; a queer, woman of color-run company that treats its business like art. It’s something my porn friends share; a desire to be recognized as legitimate in the business, while balancing our values and interests in sexual expression.

At both award events I experienced a lot of invisibility. Neither being famous nor feminine, many photographers overlooked me, and no one asked for an interview, though one host admitted I wasn’t mainstream enough (no harm done; she’s right). Yet, the privilege I do have grants me a chance to access parts of the industry that many of my peers cannot. I hope to be a “gateway queer” in this fashion. That by continuing to be myself, I can forge a path towards greater gender acceptance and sexual diversity. On a hike up the heights of Griffith Park with Tyler Knight the morning after the awards, he told me I was an “ambassador” in my field. I hope I can do myself, and others, proudly. (Pun intended…)

Princeton IvyQ Conference

I’m presenting a screening of a selection of my porn performances based on my workshop “Fucking for REEL” at Princeton University. I have had the great honor of being invited to come to colleges and universities to share my perspectives and experiences in regards to pornography, gender and sexuality among other topics. It’s with pride that I will be presenting at Princeton, in part because it’s a place I wouldn’t have been able to attend due to admission or tuition. To be invited openly as a genderqueer sex worker as part of the IvyQ conference is extremely validating, and signifies progressive conversations on gender and sexuality.

The topic of feminism and porn has become a popular one in recent months, due in large part to release of The Feminist Porn Book and forthcoming Porn Studies, Routledge peer-reviewed journal. Conversations about pornography are worthy of scholastic attention and are particularly relevant as a site of intersectionality within race, gender and sexuality and a convergence of body politics, sexual health, ethics and agency.
IvyQ is a conference which aims to create a pan-Ivy community of LGBTQ students and allies equipped with the skills to examine their identities, value those of others, and understand intersectionality. The steps to achieving this vision are three-fold: creating experiences which foster meaningful and productive social networks; educating students about the history and multiplicity of voices in the LGBTQ movement and the possible trajectories of its future; and empowering all students to feel confident in their identities and their potential to instill positive change in their own lives and the communities they inhabit. IvyQ stresses the acknowledgment and application of privilege for positive and lasting social change for LGBTQ communities.

Here’s the downloadable PDF of the entire schedule; the presenters at this event are incredible: IvyQ Program Final.

Fucking for Reel: Jiz Lee Screening

One of the most recognized genderqueer performers in the adult industry, Jiz Lee has worked in porn spanning queer, indie and mainstream genres from San Francisco to Berlin. The iconic queer porn performer has developed an organic “self-agent” process, creating a sustainable position from which to express their genuine sexual pleasure on camera. In this screening, Jiz will present highlights from their work and lead a Q&A discussion on queer pornography, visibility, and sexual media. This presentation is intended for mature audiences over the age of 18 only. The screening will contain explicit, queer sex acts that were conducted with consent and safer sex methods in practice.

Into the Wild: 2014 Feminist Porn Awards & Conference

San Francisco is wet. It’s been a few days of fairly consistent rain and I’m grateful because the entire Bay Area has been feeling a draught. It needs this. I’m also grateful because I LOVE the rain. It’s a cozy buzz with a recharging quality to it. I am happy. Yesterday I was at Pink & White’s studio with Shine and we worked to a soundtrack of jazz flowing over the downpour and occasional booms of a passing thunderstorm. I hummed along and danced in place at my standing desk. Bliss. There’s a word for people like me: pluviophile. (I’d even go so far as to say pluviosexual.)

On this day, I’m sipping chai at a coffee shop with large windows sprinkled with raindrops. Very soon, I’ll be far away from my cozy, head-in-a-laptop life, and thrust into the wild world of the Feminist Porn Awards and Conference. I do say “wild” with love. Its politicized identity seems inherently unruly, but that’s also where I find value within a community driven by passion. There’s no other event quite like it, and it remains my favorite adult industry event hands-down. Spread over the course of four days (screening, awards, and two days of conference), it’s what I will now dub as the Feminist Porn Retreat.

Jiz Lee Shar Rednour, Dylan Ryan, Jill Blakehorn, Nan Kiney

Conference Panelists Shar Rednour, Nan Kinney, Dylan Ryan, Jill Blakehorn, and me

BTW, if this is the first time you’ve heard the buzzword “feminist porn,” here is my working definition: Feminist Porn is a framework used to discuss pornography (including production and consumption) with ethics, gender equality and socio-economic values at its core. Many self-identified feminist pornographers describe their work as having motivations of expanding conventional ideas about desire and beauty standards, pleasure and power dynamics, and notions of performer agency, sexual health, and consent. I don’t see it as a noun, or as a defined thing. Identity is in the eye of the beholder. So like the Wallace-Bechdel Test, I prefer to refer to it as an analysis tool for which all porn can be applied. (I’d also recommend you pick up the Feminist Porn Book and newly released Porn Studies Journal.)

Jiz-Lee-Feminist-Porn-Awards-Audience-2013

Love Wolf Hudson’s “what the..!?” face. Meanwhile, I’m caught livetweeting his win!

And, I’ll be sitting pretty in a theater full of hot performers, producers and fans, to cheer on the winners and nominees. Compared to prolific years prior, this time I only appear in one nominated film, despite the fact that I was in a slew of movies released last year such as Girl/Boy, Tombois 2, Strapped Dykes 2, and several amazing films that will hopefully be released soon. Regardless, it’s quality over quantity and I’m as excited as ever.

The nominated film is Dear Jiz, shot almost exactly one year ago during the Feminist Porn Awards by Ms. Naughty. It’s a vulnerable solo scene under the running water of a bath, and was written by… well, people who have emailed me over the years. I read quotes from “fan mail” that have touched me. It’s a fitting narration for a masturbation, as I struggle under the emotional weight of what it feels like to receive such attention, not knowing where to channel the overwhelmed feelings of responsibility. Submerged and raw in Black/White.

Dear Jiz Lee Porn Ms Naughty

Still from Dear Jiz, a vulnerable solo shoot up for nomination.

I’ll be presenting Dear Jiz along with Ms Naughty at the Feminist Porn Conference. I’ll also be with Pink & White Productions at the conference, where BED PARTY will screen with a Q&A by Shine Louise Houston, and I’ll present two business track seminars: “If You Build It, They Will .com” on Web Development (along with co-presenter Chris Lowrance) and my “More Buck for Your Bang” presentation on empowering producers and performers with an understanding of Affiliate Marketing.

See my sidebar for a list of scheduled public events. If you’ll be there and see me, ask me for a hug. (No, seriously. I’ll be bleeding that weekend and feeling especially shy and hugs will help.)
